Catholic Marian groups began in the 1st century, which stemmed from the apocalyptic belief that Jesus was going to soon return after his death. In fourth century, leaders turned away from the apocalyptic understandings and this movement when underground where it hooked up with the religious Cult of Mary. As centuries passed, Mary devotion started to become popular among the laypeople but rarely had support from Catholic Church hierarchy. People began to follow this trend because of doctrines that promoted her Immaculate Conception and bodily assumption into heaven. However, during the Protestant reformation the Marian devotion stopped while the Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox continued following of Mary.
Once Christian wars began to break out the many Christian theologies began to falter while the Marian veneration started take its place. Mary became very human to people while still being holy and making her very relatable to believers. Then the beginnings of the Internet helped the cult of Mary land on center stage to be seen for the world. In 2000, the Marian devotion reached its all time high and its supports came from all over the world.
Then Veronica Lueken from New York City had a vision on “the day that Robert F. Kennedy was shot to death… Veronica experienced a perfume of roses… A short time later, St. Teresa, the little flower… appeared to her. Her early visions seemed to be a sort of preparations for the coming of Our Lady”. She began to be known as the “seer of Bayside” and lived from 1923-1995. Lueken had many messages from Mary, including an intensely apocalyptic vision which revealed the evil to the world. Mary said that there was corruption in the Catholic Church, within the Vatican and if people didn’t seek penance then God would return with a “terrible beyond comprehension”. The Church, of course, did not like these messages and thought that she was “overstepping… their legitimate authority”. However, Lueken’s followers still published her visions online against the Church’s wishes. Public vigils for Mary were still held at Bayside until 1975 until they moved into a new location in Flushing Meadows, New York. Veronica Lueken has not been the only one to see Marian visions and others describe Mary’s “message as peace-producing apocalyptic”.
The two websites, which are devoted to Veronica Lueken and the Virgin Mary’s apocalyptic message. The Veronica Lueken site (roses.org) is mainly focused on her works, visions and images from her devote worship. There are links to donations but the site mainly focuses on Lueken’s sayings, which have come directly from Marian visions. The other site (tldm.org) tells of Lueken’s biography and prophecies but also focuses on others that have Marian visions. Lueken seems to be one of the most followed prophetesses and has many links to world events that are signs of a major apocalypse.
